Netbook Dilemma: Price or Performance? 25 May 2010, 2:15 pm
The netbook is a great mobile computer, but that cheap price is at the cost of performance. With the appearance of "tweener" notebooks that are almost as cheap as netbooks yet have more capable hardware, is the future of the netbook in jeopardy?

Yes, I sometimes carry a man purse, or murse. Let me phrase that more appropriately-- I carry a "field bag". My field bag of choice is the Fossil Nevada field bag, which is easily the best gear bag I've ever used. It looks so manly, too.

Cambridge scientists develop lower-than-low power WORM memory 3 September 2010, 10:01 pm
Researchers at Cambridge University have recently published a paper on their new type of WORM (write once read many) memory which is even more low powered than the ones that came before it. The new electron-only design of the memory is solution processed, making it low cost as well as it requires no lithography. The device, using ZnO semiconductor nanoparticles to inject electrons into a polymer which is capable of conducting. The electrons are then used to program the memory by permanently low...

SD Card Association: flash card speeds to triple by 2012 3 September 2010, 9:35 pm
The SD Card Association (truth be told, one of our favorite card-related associations) has a new spec in the works that will almost triple the speed of its SDHC and SDXC cards, according to CNET. The specification, which should be complete Q1 next year, will achieve 300MB per second by adding a second row of electrical contacts on the bottom face of the card, and will be backward compatible with older, slower devices. Although being referred to internally as SD 4.0, brand names for the technolo...

Klipsch issues first on-ear headphones, Image S5i Rugged and bargain Image S3 earbuds 3 September 2010, 9:14 pm
It's been awhile since we sashayed through Klipsch's world headquarters back in December of last year, but the company certainly hasn't let off of the pedal. Today at IFA, it managed to introduce no fewer than three new headphones, including the outfit's very first on-ear set. The Image One was built to bring Klipsch's signature sound to folks who'd prefer cans over 'buds, and it's also amongst the first to have an Apple-centric mic and three-button remote for controlling music playback on iPod...

App Review: Angry Birds (Android) 3 September 2010, 8:29 pm
What does it take to make an addictive game? Not much -- just throw in some super simple controls, cute graphics, and basic physics. Rovio Mobile's Angry Birds is one such game that includes all these elements, and today the studio's just released a public Android beta to cater those without an iOS, webOS or Ovi-enabled device. In case you're not already familiar with the popular title, the backstory is that a gang of hungry pigs snatched away some eggs from the birds, forcing the feathered cre...

Vodafone's Microsoft Surface: like Go Fish for phones 3 September 2010, 8:10 pm
Microsoft worked with Vodafone late last year to deploy Surfaces to a few dozen stores in several European countries (much as AT&T has done in the US), and one of those units happens to be set up at the carrier's IFA booth this week. The basic idea here is that each available model appears as a card that can be twirled, resized, and flung around the screen. When the software first starts, the cards start in a deck from which you can "deal" onto the table -- but when we first approached it, ...

LG's 180-inch plasma that wasn't 3 September 2010, 7:47 pm
When we first caught wind of LG's "180-inch plasma" we were understandably enthused (and just a little skeptical), but our excitement was quickly ruined with word that LG was merely sticking nine 600Hz 60-inch plasmas next to each other and calling it a day. We got a glimpse at the "multi-vision display" (LG shorthand for "a bunch of screens next to each other") today, and it's still decently impressive in its own right. LG's managed to get the seams between the screens down to a mere 1.5mm, an...

Panasonic cranks out new 31 and 19 Series Toughbooks for Japan 3 September 2010, 7:03 pm
Panasonic's gone on a real tear here, releasing two new Toughbook models at once. While you grapple with the implications of such a thing, let's get down to details. The new 31 and 19 Series Toughbooks are 13.1-inch and 10.4-inch models, respectively, and as far as specs go, they both pack in a 160GB hard drive, up to 6GB of DDR3 SDRAM (with 2GB coming standard), and Intel QM57 Express chipset, and 1024 x 768 resolution displays. Both come with Windows 7 Professional pre-installed, and the To...

Galaxy Tab with WiMAX coming to Sprint this November? 3 September 2010, 6:44 pm
The CDMA-equipped Samsung Galaxy Tab has so far been nothing more than a sticker in a random snapshot and some whispers about Verizon, but Boy Genius Report is saying that the Tab's also bound for Sprint's network this November, on both its 3G and 4G (i.e. WiMAX) network -- à la the Galaxy S / Epic 4G. No word from Sammy HQ on this one, but it's worth noting that in our briefing, a Samsung rep mentioned that an American carrier could put Qik on it and, well, that's kind of Sprint's thing...

Droid R2-D2 gets docked -- not in a X-Wing 3 September 2010, 5:55 pm
Verizon's teaser site for the Droid 2 R2-D2 edition has been teasing a series of locked spokes, accessible by all as soon as anyone in the community solves the "puzzle." We don't know exactly what the magic code was, but regardless, thanks to David H. yesterday, we've got a new gallery of devices pics and -- oh, lookie -- a special edition Droid R2-D2 dock. We don't see room for a hyperdrive anywhere, nor wings, proton torpedos, or a cockpit for future Jedi to blast orbital space stations. So, ...

Oil sands release pollutants, contrary to government study 3 September 2010, 7:55 pm
The extraction of heavy crude oil from oil sands in Canada is releasing as many as 13 kinds of pollutants into the surrounding air and water, according to a study published in PNAS this week. The independent report directly contradicts the results of the government-administered Regional Aquatic Monitoring Program (RAMP) that claimed neither humans nor the environment were at risk from the oil extraction.
Oil sands are swaths of ground that are laced with heavy crude oi...

Gearbox Software will be taking over development from the now-defunct 3D Realms.
After the studio's closing, litigation began between 3D Realms and Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of D...

Google sticks Wave in a box, puts a bow on top 3 September 2010, 5:40 pm
Contrary to popular belief, Google Wave is not quite dead. Google plans to expand upon the open source code it has already released to form a more complete, standalone application known as "Wave in a Box." Wave will work (or not work, depending on how you look at it) as it always has, but with the new app, developers can run their own wave servers and host waves from their own machines.
"Since the beginning, it has been our vision that the Google Wave protocols could supp...

We're trudging down the long road to universal 4Mbps broadband 3 September 2010, 1:15 pm
Judging by the Federal Communications Commission's latest survey, we're still pretty far away from the FCC's National Broadband Plan goal of 4Mbps Internet download speeds for everyone. The agency's newest statistics indicate that out of 71 million wireline household connections, less than half (44 percent) matched or exceeded that benchmark, with its upload goal of 1Mbps.
Meanwhile, the number of consumers with full mobile wireless Internet accounts shot up by 40 percent...

Avatar 3D Blu-ray release will be Panasonic exclusive at first 3 September 2010, 7:34 pm
If you own a 3D HDTV and have been waiting for Avatar 3D to drop on Blu-ray, it looks like you’ll have to wait a bit longer than originally planned if you don’t own a Panasonic Viera model television. The long-awaited title is the first 3D Blu-ray movie that will get serious attention from home theater enthusiasts, and is seemingly a huge opportunity to sell consumers on the technology, so it’s pretty disappointing that Panasonic scored this timed exclusive that will keep Avatar off of the...

Apple says iPod touch outsells Sony and Nintendo combined. What? 1 September 2010, 10:21 pm
Looks as if Apple is gunning for a spot in the gaming realm, or rather has already sliced out their piece of the pie. Sony previously attacked Apple during a PSP commercial where “Marcus” told a kid playing games on an iPhone that it was made for “texting your grandmother” and not for “big boy” games. Steve Jobs retaliated earlier today at the company fall music event by revealing that both Nintendo and Sony’s portable systems are under the sales of the iPod touch alone, and that o...

iPod nano redesign: Multitouch, tiny, $149 8GB, $179 16GB 1 September 2010, 8:12 pm
In addition to all the other news coming out of Apple’s fall music event, the company announced a complete redesign of the iPod nano. The click-wheel is gone, as is a lot of the display size, as Apple instead focused on making this thing more like an iPod shuffle with a multitouch display. The new nano is 46% smaller and 42% lighter than the previous model, and while it gains multitouch and what appears to be a modified version of iOS, it loses the video camera (of course, if you want an iPod ...

FLASHBACK! Buzz Out Loud 1223: We'll be watching you (podcast) 25 August 2010, 8:28 am

Our theme for today's show? Somebody's watching you, and it ain't just the Police. It's also Facebook and Google, and apparently some people think Net neutrality means the government will be watching you, too. It ain't good. Also, Twitter makes developers mad again, and we are definitely not numb...
