Windows Phone 7 Series targeted at 38 year-old 'life maximizers' 15 March 2010, 11:36 pm
Here's a fun tidbit we just learned from Microsoft's Joe Belfiore: in order to focus Windows Phone 7 Series on the idea of best serving end users, the team actually created two fictional targets consumers named "Miles" and "Anna," a pair of married 38-year old "life maximizers" who demand the most from their devices. Yes, it's a little strange and hilariously specific on the surface -- Anna just scaled back her PR job to part-time so she can take care of the kids! Miles like to take pictures an...

Confirmed: HTC HD2 will not be upgraded to Windows Phone 7 series 15 March 2010, 10:59 pm
Bad news, HTC HD2 owners: Microsoft has finally come right out and confirmed our suspicions that the mighty HTC HD2 won't be upgraded to Windows Phone 7 Series. Joe Belfiore just told us that the HD2 is "not compliant with the Windows Phone 7 Series hardware specifications," which should end any of the lingering doubt that's clouded this issue since MWC. That certainly puts a damper on the HD2's upcoming launch on T-Mobile, but hey -- every Microsoft employee here ...

Windows Phone 7 Series will be WVGA only at launch, HVGA later 15 March 2010, 10:33 pm
Microsoft's driving home the point that developers are going to know exactly what kind of hardware they're targeting as they whip up Windows Phone 7 Series apps -- and naturally, a biggie is screen resolution since that affects how UI elements are going to be placed, how cool they can look, and how small they can realistically be. In a session at MIX10, Microsoft's Charlie Kindel has laid down the law that WP7S will be 800 x 480 -- just 800 x 480 -- at launch, a message we heard at MWC last mon...

Ballmer's visage evoked for 'developers, developers, developers' demo app on Windows Phone 7 Series 15 March 2010, 10:03 pm
You could argue that Steve Ballmer's classic "developers, developers, developers" mantra is more important to the success of Windows Phone 7 Series than of any other product in recent Microsoft history, so it comes as no surprise that he's pulled it out of his hat one more time for MIX10 today. Demoing how easy it is to take advantage of the platform's many rapid-development features, the team showed off a gangly Silverlight version of the big guy in lieu of the real deal (apparently he had a ...

Samsung Windows Phone 7 Series handset makes the scene 15 March 2010, 9:22 pm
Here's a fun little surprise: Microsoft's Joe Belfiore just ran through a Windows Phone 7 Series demo on an as-yet unannounced Samsung device here at MIX. Apart from hints at an OLED screen, we don't much about the specific hardware, but Joe also showed off a slide of the WP7S minimum requirements, so we can tell you it has at least 265MB of RAM and 8GB of flash, as well as DirectX9 acceleration. We're due to meet with Joe in just a few, so we'll obviously dig for more -- stay tuned!Continue re...

FCC submits National Broadband Plan to Congress: at least 100M US homes with access to 100Mbps download speeds 15 March 2010, 9:08 pm
Right on schedule, the FCC has submitted its National Broadband Plan. There's a lot to go through -- note the calls for broadband benchmarking and pricing reports -- and we're still combing, but here's what we've noticed so far. The six goals set out for "the next decade" propose that every American have the affordable access (the key, oft-repeated phrase) to "robust broadband services," and, more specifically, at least 100 million US homes with affordable access to at least 100MBps down / 50Mb...

Confirmed: Marketplace will be the only way to get apps on Windows Phone 7 Series 15 March 2010, 8:24 pm
We just got out of a meeting with Microsoft's Todd Biggs, who dropped a little bombshell on us: the only official way to get apps on a Windows Phone 7 Series device will be to download them from the just-detailed Windows Phone Marketplace. That means developers will have to abide by Microsoft's technical and content guidelines in order to make it in, with the very real possibility of rejection -- sound familiar? Todd told us Microsoft plans to avoid Apple-style submission headaches by making ...

Lensbaby Composer, Fisheye and Soft Focus review: creativity abounds 15 March 2010, 7:59 pm
Lensbaby lenses have been out and about for a long while now, but we were just recently able to sit down with a few of the company's best and brightest in order to form our own opinions of the (admittedly overlooked) creative devices. For those unaware, Lensbaby makes a handful of lenses and optics that help users engage in selective focus photography, and frankly, create all sorts of wild images that would be otherwise difficult or impossible to create within Photoshop. There's no question tha...

Microsoft avoids being lost in translation with new framework 15 March 2010, 11:03 pm
The Microsoft Translator team has given up and concluded that "no matter how many machines you throw at translation, it is still impossible to get the correct, error-free, contextually accurate translation every time." Microsoft's solution to this problem is the Collaborative Translations Framework, which supposedly combines the scale and speed of automatic machine translation with the accuracy and context awareness of human translation.
At MIX 2010, Microsoft Translator API version 2 wa...

Microsoft shows off Windows Phone 7 Series dev tools at MIX10 15 March 2010, 9:33 pm
The big theme at Microsoft's MIX10 developer conference today was developing for Windows Phone 7 Series, and key to this was the new Silverlight 4. For the first time, Microsoft showed off third-party applications for the forthcoming phone platform, and talked about how third-party applications integrate with the platform.
Silverlight is becoming increasingly widely available for the browser, with Microsoft claiming 60 percent of all Internet devices now support it (up from ...

Controlling multiple qubits with hyper-entanglement 15 March 2010, 8:09 pm
Scientists are quickly putting the single-qubit system out of fashion with new setups that can simultaneously manipulate and read multiple qubits. An international collaboration recently completed an experiment involving the control of up to ten qubits at once, using hyper-entanglement and simple "cat states." While the system doesn't always read out perfectly, the approach could be further refined to produce better results.
Because qubit behavior is based in probability, it is difficult...

In fact, two in five BlackBerry owners plan to swap their current device for an iPhone when it's time to upgrade, according to market researcher firm Crowd Science.

Sputnik Mania! Documentaries, old footage, and copyright 15 March 2010, 6:35 pm
When independent filmmaker David Hoffman set out to make a documentary on the Sputnik hysteria that swept the US in the 1950s, he styled the piece as an hour-and-a-half feature film. He relied heavily on old news clips from the time, none of which were provided by the networks themselves (most didn't even know what they had). Hoffman spent months tracking down bits of footage from collectors on eBay and from uploaders on YouTube. Whenever he made contact with someone who had...

Globular cluster divorcees could shed light on dark matter 15 March 2010, 5:51 pm
A paper released in Science last week detailed research that showed globular clusters may be more noncommittal than previously thought. The spherical collections of stars are normally anchored to a single galaxy, but a new study shows that there may be some globular clusters that are currently between galaxies, floating within galaxy clusters and looking for a new home. Scientists are hoping that by tracking globular clusters as they settle down in a new galaxy, the motion could provide in...

Bethesda's new property: online co-op dungeon crawler a-hoy! 15 March 2010, 3:00 pm
When Bethesda tells you it has a new IP to reveal at a show like GDC, you clear your schedule. During the show, the company camped out in a suite with small sign taped to the door, and we were asked to keep the very existence of the meeting under our hat until the embargo was up. Luckily, we're now able to tell about the publisher's newest game: developed by inXile, published by Bethesda, it's coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, it will be out "when it's done," and...

SXSW 2010: Playing with Place - Location-aware games 15 March 2010, 9:38 pm
Katheryn started off the session giving us geo location coordinates that only a machine would love. Her followup to this was the context matters; our location around a place and who is around that space with us. There is also excitement around discovery with geo. An example could be geocache games which created back in the old old black and white LCD “latitude and longitude” GPS units and have worked their way into the App stores of the iPhone and Android handsets.

Steve Jobs hates Google CEO Eric Schmidt? 15 March 2010, 8:21 pm
Those are some strong words, but if CNBC journalists and analysts are to be believed, the relationship between Apple and Google is so strained as they both compete to win in the mobile space that it has come to a point where “Steve Jobs simply hates Eric Schmidt.” Hey, if that hared fuels the fire of innovation and competition, then it’s the consumers who will walk away the winners in this battle. SXSW 2010: We F*cked Up: Happy Cog and Friends Exploring Failures Together 15 March 2010, 7:44 pm
This cleverly named, yet light hearted SXSW 2010 panel of Greg Storey, Will Reynolds, Greg Hoy, Tracey Halvosen and was narrated by Kevin Hoffman. Panelists told stories that technology consultants must deal with every day through interactions with their clients. Most of the stories told were a bit sensationalized around a client’s unrealistic
expectations, mostly in regard to time to complete a project or disagreements of which technology to base a project on. It seems that client...

SXSW 2010: Fun with HTML5 video 15 March 2010, 6:59 pm
RealAudio and ultimately Real Video was the original, old school audio and video compression used on the Internet during the early Web 1.0 days. No doubt that Web 2.0’s rise in popularity was caused in part by YouTube and the ability for its users to easily send video up to a server and have it transcoded and streamed on the fly - without the need for expensive programs like the RealMedia server set.
YouTube leveraged the Adobe Flash technology, which in its infancy, would show only car...

SXSW 2010: Media Armageddon: What happens when the New York Times dies? 15 March 2010, 2:53 am
This is a session wrap-up from SXSW 2010. To start the session, a question was asked by the moderators to the audience “If the times ceased to exist, how would you feel?” Only a few hands in an audience of 500 said that would be disappointed. Unboxing Live 055: 27-inch Apple iMac 13 March 2010, 1:05 am
When Apple introduced the latest generation of iMac to the world, and made it known that they were able to get that LED-backlit display up to 27-inches, we knew it would not only be a gorgeous machine, but it would pretty much be right up there with a low-end Mac Pro if specced out right. We immediately picked up one of the new 27-inch iMacs to put out theory to the test, but in the meantime, we’ve got an unboxing video for you that shows off the ridiculously huge Mac, as well as the little de...

iPad gains screen rotation lock, loses mute 12 March 2010, 11:51 pm
Looks like Apple has been hard at work making some final tweaks to the design and functionalist of the iPad. As you can see in the image above, previously there was a mute switch above the volume rocker, similar to what you’d find on an iPhone or iPod touch, but now that switch has been reassigned to provide a different function. It’s not a quick way to enable and disable the automatic screen rotation when turning the device from landscape to portrait. Our thoughts on this one? Good move.

Qualcomm patent details all-in-one folding tablet, phone, netbook 15 March 2010, 1:15 pm
Part of the reason smartphone have largely replaced PDAs over the last few years is that there are a growing number of activities that require an always-on internet connection. But another reason is that people don’t like carrying around two or three devices when they can stuff just one item in their pocket. Who needs a phone, PDA, and digital camera when you’ve got a smartphone?
So at a time when some companies are betting that we need a new category of device to fit between a phone and a...

Dell offers new Mini 10 netbook with Linux in Japan 15 March 2010, 1:15 pm
Dell Japan is selling the Linux version of the new Inspiron Mini 10 netbook. Like the Windows version, the Linux model has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and 802.11b/g/n WiFi. But it comes with an open source operating system.
The product description says this model comes with Ubuntu 9.10, Moblin 2.1. It’s not entirely clear what that means, but my best guess is that it’s a version of Ubuntu Linux that uses the la...

Lenovo: 80% of sales will be laptops, smartphones, mobile devices 15 March 2010, 1:15 pm
Laptops may be the new desktop, with mobile computers already outselling desktop PCs. But Lenovo sees the mobile space getting even bigger. In fact, within five years, Lenovo’s CEO expects 80% of the company’s sales to come from mobile products with wireless internet connections.
That doesn’t just mean laptops and netbooks. Lenovo introduces its first smartphone at CES in January. And while I haven’t heard anything about an iPad competitor from Lenovo just yet, I wouldn’t be surprise...

Toshiba to launch a line of slate PCs 12 March 2010, 2:08 pm
Toshiba is making it known that the company ha s no intention of sitting out the tablet PC revolution. You know, if it actually turns out to be a revolution.
Netbooks began to take the world by storm when Asus introduced a consumer oriented low cost mini-laptop in late 2007. It took half a year for HP to introduce the first real competitor for the Eee PC 701, and another few months before the rest of the PC industry really caught up.
Things are moving very differently in the tablet space. Ever...

Look, up in the sky! It’s a netbook killer. No it’s an oversized iPod touch! No it’s the iPad!
Apple’s new 9.7 inch touchscreen tablet may or may not be a revolutionary new device that will change the way we interact with computers. But one thing’s for certain. It’s up for pre-order today, and should begin shipping in a few months.
Are you planning on pre-ordering one? Or will you wait until you can see one in person before plunking down some cash? Or maybe you’re just not intere...

Fusion Based AMD Netbook Chip in 2011 11 March 2010, 9:25 pm
Looks like AMD is finally going to accept netbooks and make a dedicated chip specifically for netbooks. This new chip will be released in their “Fusion” range of chips, which will be released sometime next year in 2011.
This netbook based chip will have power consumption in the 10-15 watt range (as opposed to current AMD ones hovering at around 35 watts) and good integrated graphics performance “so you won’t need the Ion graphics to give it half-decent performance”. It will be aimed ...

JooJoo tablet gets a sexy new user interface, better video capabilities 11 March 2010, 9:24 pm
The JooJoo tablet from Fusion Garage is due out later this month. While the tablet got off to a rocky start, thanks to a high profile dispute with original partner, TechCrunch, the team at Fusion Garage has put a lot of work into making this 12 inch tablet an attractive alternative to the Apple iPad.
Sure, the JooJoo won’t run iPhone or iPad apps or any of the thousands of applications designed or Windows or Android tablets. But the point of the JooJoo was always to be primarily a tablet des...

OCZ's New 30GB Onyx SSD to Debut for Under $100 11 March 2010, 9:24 pm
OCZ also has its fair share of high-priced SSDs, but its new Onyx line is looking to give a speed boost to enthusiasts on a budget. The new Onyx SSD has an MSRP below $100 (we're guessing $99.95) – the catch is that the low price tag only gets you 30GB of storage capacity.
Read speeds for the budget SSD are 125 MB/sec while write speeds are on the low side at 70 MB/sec.
“As new technologies become available, OCZ continues to expand both our enterprise and consumer SSD lines, and one of our...
