  • Summary: Outstanding Database Management Software
  • Comment: FileMaker Pro 10

Conflict of interest disclosure: FileMaker provided a free copy of FileMaker Pro 10 to me for the purpose of this review.

FileMaker comes in two editions, standard Pro and Pro Advanced and is available in versions for both the Windows and Macintosh platforms. There is also a FileMaker Server 10 edition. This is a review of standard edition of FileMaker Pro 10 for Mac and will focus on the new features.

FileMaker Pro is a database for a single user that includes the capability to access remote FileMaker databases. FileMaker allows the user to store virtually any data type (i.e. text, numbers, photos, movies, etc.) and to define relationships between data fields. It provides multiple ways to access and manipulate the data. It is designed to be utilized by users that are new to database development and also by the advanced user. Developer tools are available for the advanced user.

The capability of FileMaker to import, access, and export data is one of its strong points. It utilizes open XML and OBDC standards for the exchange of data. Reports can be produced in pdf format and can be published on the web.
Extensive information about how to utilize all of the features of FileMaker Pro is available on the FileMaker web site and can be found at : [...]

FileMaker Pro 10 comes with 30 starter solutions and 10 new themes.

When I was offered the opportunity to review FileMaker Pro 10, I was interested to find out how far the database software had progressed since I had last used it over five years ago and to see if it was still as valuable a resource as I had know it to be. I first used FileMaker when it was only available for the Macintosh platform. For a number of years, I used it on a daily basis.

FileMaker Pro 9 was already installed on my iMac when I installed FileMaker Pro 10. After FileMaker Pro 10 was installed, I opened an existing FileMaker Pro 9 database. A new database was produced with "copy" appended to the name. All functions appeared to perform the same as they had when the database was being accessed by FileMaker Pro 9. No problems or error messages were encountered. Both FileMaker Pro 9 and FileMaker Pro 10 continued to be fully functional.

When reviewing the new features that come with FileMaker Pro 10, I found a mixture of features that included new tools, enhancements to existing features, and changes that will ensure that FileMaker Pro databases will be available to any location on the Internet in the foreseeable future.

The "Saved Find" feature, in my opinion, adds a quick and easy way to select records within the database and eliminates the need to re-enter a specific find that is being used multiple times. I found this feature easy to setup and use.

The "Status Toolbar" feature allows the user to customize the toolbar to match the individual needs of each database. At first glance, the area allocated for the Status Toolbar seemed to be too large. Even after I selected my favorite features, a lot of blank space remained. However, if I really needed this space to be available for the viewing of the database records, I had the choice of hiding the Status Toolbar. A possible future enhancement would be the capability to adjust the size of the status toolbar.

When I started this review, I was not aware of the addressability issue that involves the IPv4 and IPv6 standards. The current IPv4 standard is based on a 32-bit address and provides an addressing capability of about 4 billion addresses. The IPv6 Standard is based on a 128 bit address and significantly increases the number of available addresses. Bottom line, with IPv6 support as part of FileMaker Pro 10, the migration from IPv4 address standards to IPv6 address standards should be a non-event for FileMaker Pro users.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with both the new features and the overall capability of FileMaker Pro 10. This software product far exceeds my capability to come up will problem situations. In the past, I have seen users relatively new to database software, develop amazing and highly productive solutions. I consider FileMaker Pro to be an outstanding software product.

One of the key issues that has sold me on FileMaker Pro is the developers commitment to the open exchange of data. Over the years, they have consistently enhanced FileMaker to be compatible with standards that support the exchange of information between various platforms. The new features "Send Mail via SMTP", "Updated ESS Support", and "IPv6 Support" are three examples of this continuing commitment.

  • Summary: File Pro great softwear
  • Comment: Working for an Attorney, files are important to maintain on several levels of information. This software sorts by every way thinkable and is quick at the task. Reports are customizable and present professionally. It was easy to order through Amazon, although it did not come with the booklet and only the CD Rom.

  • Summary: Annoyance
  • Comment: Primarily downrated for the accessibility. I was forced to upgrade Filemaker because I purchased a new computer. What I didn't realize that in trying to upgrade files it constantly asked for an account name and password - even when I never used one! The "help" area was not useful and believe me I tried everything.

I'm back to using my old Filemaker on an older machine until I can figure this out!

  • Summary: Good performance and internal reliability but very quirky
  • Comment: I bought Filemaker Pro 10 expecting a fast, mature, reliable, easy to use mainstream RDBMS solution for MAC.

It did turn out to be fast and reliable as a stand-alone program. But its sure not mainstream (offering no native SQL), its user interface is primitive and very un-mac like. It includes some ODBC/JDBC drivers to help integrating third party tools, but they are poorly written buggy, and offer limited functionality so even external SQL access is less than optimal.

Also on the MAC side, some features (like importing from other data sources) require Rosette to be running. Thats not really acceptable for a product thats supposed to be this mature given how long intel MAC's have been around.

If you don't have experience with other databases, and want a fast, powerful, reliable desktop DB for the MAC you might consider it. But there are far better choices on the PC side, and if you ever expect to use more traditional SQL based databases I would not invest the significant effort and time required to learn Filemaker's proprietary system.
