  • Summary: Why are you waiting to upgrade to Windows 7?
  • Comment: Windows 7 is by far and away the biggest jump for the PC since Windows' inception. Specifically, the upgrade software, Windows 7 Premium, offers much more than the standard Windows 7 Home Edition.

Most notably though, the process of upgrading Windows software has never been made easier.

As a PC enthusiast and as someone who builds computers, I would highly recommend that all Vista users upgrade to Windows 7, and those using XP, should seriously consider it.

It's too bad that it takes corporations so long to make these kinds of changes. Once corporations start making the switch, I have no doubt that Windows 7 will become the huge hit that it is, with both the corporate and personal computing world.

  • Summary: Do not purchase this product. It is not want you think it is.
  • Comment: This is not a copy of the Windows 7 it is an upgrade if you already have windows 7. It did me no good to get it because I do not have windows 7 on my computer. Then if you have to send it back they will not refund all your money. I never used the product. It was notregistered and it is not on my computer. But when I paid the full price and found out I could not use it they did not send me my money back they only gave me a partial credit.

  • Summary: Works Great, XP Mode is the solution
  • Comment: I have some apps that users love to use, but will not run on Vista and Windows 7, but run perfectly in XP mode (Windows 7 Pro only). There are many low ratings for this product, due to confusion over whether a particular computers hardware will support XP mode. That should be confirmed first. On a computer that does support XP Mode, can run practicaly any older application for Windows 98 to Windows XP and it runs at speed. Can setup icons to run the XP mode application, as if it appears to be installed in Windows 7, so from the users perspective it is transparent, that it had to be installed in XP Mode to get it to run. It is the perfect solution. Hi performance and complete compatibility. It turns out, Windows 7 supports running many older applications, directly. Need to try it to see. If the application crashes, Windows 7 prompts with some help to optimize it. Can also try setting the compatibility mode manually.
If it does not work properly in Windows 7, then it will run in XP Mode. Installing apps in XP Mode may require more expertise.

I run Media Center on this computer reliably recording, off the cable, TV shows. Requires reboot every 3-4 weeks. Other than that, the system is very stable, the most stable windows OS I have ever used, and I have used most of them. Next I plan to add a second tuner to see how it does recording 2 programs at the same time. Apparently it is supposed to be able to record 4 at the same time.
Whether Microsoft OS can ever get to the reliability of UNIX is a question. A MAC would be more reliable, but I am not familiar of its Media Center equivelant application.

Windows 7 is much more reliable with no SP than Vista was with no SP. Vista SP1 seemed to make it reliable, but still would not run older apps. Not sure why Windows 7 will need a SP. Maybe to make it even more reliable?

The computer is a new HP Pavilion Slimline s3700y, which uses AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.6GHz with 3GB RAM. It support XP Mode, and was less than $400. Although it is a 64 bit architecture, am using the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Pro. Using Asus M2N61-AR motherboard. It is a suprisingly fast computer in a slim case. Part of the good performance may be in the RAM speed PC2-6400 MB/sec. The supplied 320GB Hard Drive is 7200 RPM as well. The passmark rating is 1119, which is more than twice as fast as any other of 20 computers that I support, including many that are dual processor. The performance of this computer is dramatically higher than the prior fastest computer I support, which uses an Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8GHz with a passmark rating of 386 (and runs applications very fast).

I do not work for HP or sell HP products, but I do use a lot of HP products and find HP support is excellent. So the only purpose of this review is to help other users.

  • Summary: It works
  • Comment: I only purchased this because you must have Professional version to work in Windows XP mode. Had I known that, I would have just bought a computer with Professional version already installed.
