  • Summary: excellentt for travel
  • Comment: I purchased this little netbook for travel and it is excellent for what we need it for. Just be aware it has no cd/dvd drive so to add programs etc. you really need to purchase one. (under $50). I put a couple of games on and office suite with one note and outlook, so now it is completely functional for what I needed. We will not be loading on a lot of music or pictures for that matter so the lack of space on the hard drive is not an issue for us. I have a little wireless mouse for it and I cut down a mouse pad and it works great on airplane service trays. So far the battery life is great and when all is said and done I am very happy with this little netbook.

  • Summary: Get this netbook
  • Comment: If you're in the market for a netbook, this is the one you want. My girlfriend (and I, occasionally) have been using this one for about 6 weeks and we have zero complaints. It seems like the battery lasts forever. Asus has put together a really great netbook.

  • Summary: Great Netbook
  • Comment: I've had the 1005PE for a couple days now and I love it.

The ExpressGate option on the left power button isn't the best iteration of a Linux based OS. It still looks very homemade.

The keyboard on the 1005PE is great, with the exception of the right shift key, which I constantly miss for the up arrow. Hopefully with more usage I will adjust.

The keyboard is also a little too flexible, but not a deal breaker. Overall it is very easy to type on, expecially with the chiclet arrangement.

The mouse is much more click-able than the 1008HA model that I've used. I actually really like the mouse because of that extra flexibility.

The size is perfect for travel. Even though a higher resolution on the screen would have been nice, the default resolution is fine for basic things like browsing the web, writing in Word and OneNote, etc. (What else would you use it for?).

I upgraded the OS from Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Professional. Starter is okay for basic tasks, but I really like having the full Aero interface and I don't like being restricted with customization.

ASUS has some nice additions like SHE (Super Hybrid Engine), but also has some annoying managers like the toolbar on the top and the wallpaper manager (apparently Windows doesn't do a good enough job on it's own) that replaces your wallpaper with ASUS own until it is disabled.

All in all I'm very happy with my purchase and I will continue to support ASUS, especially in the netbook category.

  • Summary: Probably the best netbook available.
  • Comment: Pros:

    Small
minimal battery extrusion unlike some other netbooks I looked at.
great battery life, I only charge this baby every three days or so.
Fast enough for almost anything you do.

    Cons:

Glossy screen WHY????? I bought a matte screen protector for viewguard, and it works well.
no scroll bar on touchpad, you can do two finger scrolling but I find it is not as reliable as the good old bar.

This is an awesome netbook. We own three in my immediate family. Windows 7 is great and runs well on the netbook. Microsoft disables changing the background, luckily asus saves the day with an app change it. It is a great tool for portability, but it is not good for office work. Amazon has the best price.

  • Summary: Hardware Good, Software Bad
  • Comment: I'll keep this brief. The 1005PE is one damn quick netbook. Running either Windows 7 or Snow Leopard, it boots and runs apps much faster than I would have expected (I upgraded the RAM to 2GB). I was always skeptical about how capable netbooks were, and this one delivers big time.

Windows 7 Starter sucks; it's pretty well known. This isn't my complaint. The recovery disc that comes with the unit forces you to install all the proprietary garbage software from ASUS and third parties when you try to clean install the OS from the OEM disc. It's ironic, because while it's installing, there are check boxes next to the extra software, but you can't uncheck them. If you cancel the install during this part, Windows states it has not been installed properly, even though it's already installed on the system.

This is a huge disappointment, as it takes quite some time to uproot the crap that ASUS installs. My recommendation: buy this netbook with a copy of Windows Home Premium, the do a clean install from the Home disc. The Anytime Upgrade key doesn't work unless you install from the ASUS W7 Starter recovery disk first. Pretty shady that companies are allowed to force you to install extra software. Oh well.
