- Comment: I've had this printer for around six months now. Bought it to replace my ancient Laserjet 4m (which finally developed enough problems to be put out to pasture) and a couple of older inkjets/all-in-ones (none of which were network friendly). It does an adequate job replacing all these other devices.
The touch-screen is really nice, and HP could really have eliminated almost all of the other buttons on the panel. I definitely recommend going for the 8500 wireless model. The lower model does NOT have wireless networking or the touch-screen. My printer is in close enough proximity to my network switch that I could easily hardwire it (my LJ4 was networked), but the wireless works wonderfully and eliminates one cable from my office.
Black text is dark and crisp. Probably not quite as good as the LJ, but very close and certainly sufficient. Color printing is very good as well. I haven't printed many photos on this printer, but I've had mixed results with them - some have turned out very good, and others only fair (which I think is most likely due to software, print settings, cheap photo paper or some combination thereof). Print speed is excellent. Auto two sided printing is very nice and saves on paper.
The printer has a ton of features. I especially love the "scan to network folder" feature, which allows you to scan a document directly to a folder on a networked computer. You can set up multiple folders to save to (ie a different folder for each person in your home or office). The "scan to email" feature is also nice. This allows you to send the scanned document directly to an email address in the printer's address book. You can set up several "from" email addresses. These features allow you to save the scanned document as PDF, JPG or TIFF, and you can scan either single- or two-sided originals. Of course, you can also scan photos and documents via the software on any networked computer.
The software is large, and takes a little while to install. I had no problems installing the software, or setting up the wireless connectivity. The software is a little slow on older computers, but is speedy enough on newer ones. I had a few problems with the software, most/all of which have been fixed by HP. I suggest installing the HP Update, which is an option during install (if I recall correctly). This will automatically update the software when HP releases updates. You can modify a lot of the printer's settings via the software or panel, so you don't always have to go to the printer and use the small screen to change things.
Bluetooth is supported, but the adapter is not included (they are inexpensive and available almost anywhere these days). USB flash drives and most memory cards are also supported. It scans the drive/card automatically when inserted and there are tons of functions you can perform on the photos (crop, resize, rotate, + more). You can even save the files to a networked computer.
Some other reviewers have complained the printer is loud or noisy. I haven't found that to be the case. It's certainly not inaudible, but it's also not louder than other printers I've used. Paper handling is a little sparse -- a single input tray handles all the different paper sizes (the higher "Premier" model adds a second tray). When you want to print a photo, you have to remove the letter paper from the tray first. This is okay for me because 99% of what I print is on letter paper. I only occasionally print on legal, photo or other paper. The printer does go through a very annoying "check" when you turn it on. This takes a couple of minutes, so it's not that bad (probably less time than my older LJ took to "warm up"). Other reviewers have mentioned this also. It's by far the most annoying thing about the printer.
Overall the printer is great and I would highly recommend it.

- Comment: I recently purchased this all in one printer and already I am having problems with the quality of the copies.
I purchased this particular machine because it was recommended to me as the machine to get for my daily use, I frustrated that I have had this machine about one month and already I am having problems. The machine was easy enough to set up but now I will have to hassle with HP about why I am getting long black lines through every copy that I make.

- Summary: Excellent Printer/Scanner. VOIP Fax requires some tech knowledge.
- Comment: I will let the previous reviews speak to the printing and scanning functions of this Print/Scan/Fax system for the most part. I find them to be at or above my expectations of this unit prior to purchasing it. The FAX functionality via standard analog is fine. Getting the system to work via many VOIP (Vonage, MagicJack, etc.) carriers will require some work and testing.
Vonage, MagicJack, etc. have programmed their digital-analog line converters to detect if a FAX machine is connected. Connecting the fax as the in-line center between the physical phone and the analog line jack will not work. There are two ways to connect the fax and have it function properly. Either purchase a phone/answering machine that has a line -> fax connector (similar to the line -> phone connector) on the rear of the unit or connect both via a dual analog coupler jack with the phone connected to the coupler with a cord that is at MOST half the length of the cord connected to the fax unit. This will trick the Vonage or MagicJack into thinking a phone is connected to the digital -> analog line. It is also a good idea to view the fax support page ([...]), and perform a few additional tasks.
1. Disable Error correction.
2. Set the line to 14400.
The fax works when connected this way.
I would like to point out that this is not a problem with the HP unit as the fax is built to standard specifications. This is a problem deliberately created by Vonage, etc. in order to upsell their dedicated fax line product.

- Summary: What a Piece of Junk! Don't Buy!!!
- Comment: This printer was purchased in Mid May. Took at least 2-3 hours to set up the wireless. It has all gone down hill from there. The wireless connection gets "lost". The paper feed never worked properly without shutting the machine down and starting over. Replaced ink cartridges and was still receiving an error message to replace the cartridge. The last straw was when making copies there was a big black line going down the middle of the paper. Called HP support which I must say STINKS! I was sent another printer which is "refurbished" This one has another set of problems like the high pitch whine that comes from the back of the printer. I called HP support and was told that the high pitch noise is normal. The tech support is truly a joke. Along with a new set of problems (touch key pad freezes, feeder tray rollers do not reset etc). This machine has been set up for two days and I have had it already. I am working with tech support to get this thing returned for a refund. It is a true piece of junk. After this experience and the lack of help from customer support I will most likely not buy another HP anything! I have owned several printers and computers in the past but never anything with such poor quality.
Stay away from this piece of junk. You will be saving yourself a lot of time and aggravation!
